When the house in Westville was purchased in 1989, it offered the challenge that comes with following the real estate mantra of buying the house in the worst condition in the best neighborhood you can afford. After investing heavily in the renovations of the interior, we turned our attention the approximately 4/10th acre of woods and weeds which was called “the yard.” After clearing most of the trees ourselves we were left with a desirable locust tree and a desirable maple tree of decent shape and a weeping willow tree with a 15 foot diameter! The willow’s canopy covered over 1/3 of our lot as well as the neighbor’s. Resigning ourselves to shade gardens, as this tree blocked the southwest exposure to the sun over more than half the yard, the original border garden was drastically different than what is seen in the garden photo gallery.

In the late 90’s, heavy rains and high winds took their toll on the old willow and for safety reasons it had to be cut down. After scrabbling to re-locate and re-home all of our shade loving plants the gardens as they are today began to unfold, expanding the borders, adding the rose garden and building a larger koi pond adjacent to the 1000 square foot, multi-level deck.
The garden as it exists today encompasses the borders, patterned after English cottage gardens, the rose garden, more formal garden areas around the deck for architectural detail and a “meditation garden” with a lily pond and waterfall. The larger three level pond adjacent to the deck was built to accommodate the koi which “out grew” the lily pond!
We hope you enjoy the photos of the Eagle Hill garden. We are available on a fee for service basis for advice on garden design, plant selection and pond design and maintenance. Click here or on image to take a stroll through the Eagle Hill Gardens.
